50X70 THE FORGOTTEN TIVOLI
€53…A swing squeaks in the wind otherwise it’s deserted and almost a little bit eerie. The mist has settled in for the night and the abandoned carousel looks like it took its last turn decades ago. Small decorative lamps crackle to life and emit a fragile, warm glow; scents of roasted almonds and hot sugar appear from nowhere and all of a sudden, lonely streets are transformed into something else and the Tivoli comes to life.

70X50 Diving with you
€53…We’re falling, falling, falling. Just as we’re about to hit the water, the cloth of our kimonos catch the wind, and we land gently in the sea. All giggly, I fill my lungs with air before diving into the blue. Then I notice I’m alone again, but I don’t feel lonely. I swim side by side with sparkling animals. Oh, I’d forgotten how much I love to swim. And now I’ve somehow gained my energy back.

50X70 Island of Eiffel
€53…When I was young, we had a picture of the tower hanging in the kitchen. A black and white photo of people working tirelessly on a structure whose very idea was condemned as utter folly. When I was older, I read about the tower in a book and realized that it was quite close to my grandmother’s village. We went there together and took in the view. It was nothing like the photographs. That was the week before we emptied out her house and sorted out her soap collection.

50X70 New floating York
€53…The words pour out of me. I talk about all the adventures, trips to places I never got to follow along. Cities I have only heard stories about. New York, Paris, Tokyo, Stockholm. About the sounds that echoed through that lonely house. The slow, steady drip of the tap and distant laughter coming from the playground where I never played. The feeling of bitterness that set in from some unknown place. I talk about the map with the letters and finally, my own journey here.

70X50 MR FRANK
€53… Frank looks like everyone else but when he lifts his jumper he has a little contraption on his tummy, just above his belly button. At first glance it looks like a clock, but upon closer inspection you see it’s a small compass that points to “Right” or “Wrong”. As you’d expect, Frank takes all the important decisions, although he can only use the compass once a day. He is where our expressions ”trust your gut instinct” and ”listen to your inner compass” come from.
